Never. Betsy will never ask Mom for money, not for anything, and she tells her so on the first call. If someone claiming to be Betsy asks, it’s a scam, so hang up. The service costs $2 a day, billed $60 a month, agreed at sign-up. The voice on her phone never asks her for a cent.
Not ever, not for anything.
What does Betsy say about money?
She brings it up herself, before the first story. A call sounds like this.
Second: I will never ask you for money. Ever. If I do, hang up on me. That’s the serious part done. Sarah says you taught fourth grade for thirty-one years. What was the very first day like?
It is the first of three promises. At the end of that same call she adds the second: “If a call ever comes from a different number saying it’s me, it isn’t.”
How can Mom tell a fake Betsy from the real one?
Two tests, short enough to repeat to her sister. If it is a different number, it isn’t Betsy, because Betsy always calls from the same one. If it asks for money, it isn’t Betsy, whatever number it came from. Either way, she hangs up. The second test still holds if a scammer fakes the number.
How do I know this isn’t a scam?
It’s the right question to ask of anything that phones your mother. The number reaches her from you, in your own text or your own voice, which is the opposite of how a scam arrives. Betsy never calls cold, and she says what she is before she asks about Mom’s life. The price is on the page, and stopping takes one word. Betsy is made by PM Frontier LLC, 30 N Gould Street, Sheridan, Wyoming 82801. Anyone can call her at 1-855-HI-BETSY. That number never calls anyone, so a call showing it isn’t Betsy.
Does Betsy help if someone else is after Mom’s money?
She asks. Now and then, the way a friend would: “Anybody call you about money this week?” If Mom says somebody is after her money, the family hears the same day. In a 2019 survey of 1,408 Americans and Canadians targeted by scams, the FINRA Foundation, the BBB Institute and the Stanford Center on Longevity found people were more likely to lose money “if they did not have anyone to discuss the offer with.” Betsy is somebody to tell. What Betsy is has the rest.
