Betsy will never call asking for money. If someone claiming to be her does, it’s a scam. Hang up.

Questions

Does Mom have to agree to Betsy?

Checked November 5, 2026

A woman of 84 sits on a sofa beside her daughter, pointing at her with mock authority, both laughing, a smartphone in her hand.

Yes. Betsy is a computer voice, and Mom knows that. Either she dials Betsy herself when she’s ready, or you confirm she’s okay with it and tell her to expect the call. Then Betsy asks again at the end of every call, “Same time tomorrow?” If she says stop, it stops.

Nobody gets a cold call.

How does her yes work?

  1. Before the first call. She dials when she is ready, which is the default. Or you choose to have Betsy call: you confirm she’s okay with it, you tell her to expect the call, and we keep a record of who said so and when.
  2. On the first call. Betsy says what she is in the first ninety seconds, says she keeps a recording so she can remember what Mom tells her, and asks, “Is that all right with you?”
  3. At the end of every call. “Same time tomorrow?” It is a real question, and she can say no.

What do I actually say to her?

Something she can say no to. This is the text we give you, to send from your own phone:

Your text

Mom, I signed you up for something called Betsy. She’ll call you every day if you want her to. Save this number as Betsy: (the number on your Tell Mom screen). Call her when you’re ready. She knows you’re coming.

“If you want her to” is the part that matters. Tell Mom has the other versions, including the one for your phone on her kitchen table.

Can I set it up as a surprise?

No. Betsy never calls cold. She calls someone who said yes herself, or someone whose child confirmed she’s okay with it and told her to expect the call, as her terms say. A surprise is how a scam arrives. Your own voice or your own text is how Betsy does. Will Betsy ever ask for money? covers the rest of that.

What if she says no?

Then Betsy doesn’t call. If you think she might like the voice more than the idea, put your phone on the table next time you visit and call Betsy together, so she hears it with you in the room and answers for herself. If she tries it and later says stop on any call, the calls stop. What Betsy is has the rest, and Betsy for a parent who says she’s fine is for the mother who has already told you no.

Questions people ask

What does my confirmation count as?

You’re telling us she’s okay with it and that you told her to expect the call. We keep a record of who said so and when, and Betsy says what she is in the first ninety seconds.

Can she change her mind later?

Yes, on any call, in one word. She says “stop” and the calls stop. No script, no “are you sure.” Unused months are refunded.

Will Mom know she's talking to a computer?

Yes. Betsy tells her on every call, in plain words. If Mom asks, Betsy answers straight.
