Texting

She asks first.

Betsy only texts someone who said yes, out loud, on a call. Here’s exactly how that goes.

Today: Betsy isn’t sending texts yet. They start after the phone companies finish reviewing this number. This page is how it works from the first one.

How you say yes

You’re on a call with Betsy, either on 1-855-HI-BETSY (1-855-442-3879), the number printed on hibetsy.com, or on one of her daily calls. She’s a computer voice, and she has already said so. Before she sends a text, she asks for it, in words like these:

“May I text you my number, so it’s easy to save as Betsy? It’s one text, from Betsy, to the phone you’re calling from. Your usual message and data rates may apply. You can reply STOP any time to stop, or HELP for help. My terms and privacy page are at hibetsy.com. I don’t share your number with anyone for their marketing, and you don’t have to say yes. Is that a yes or a no?”

“Yes.”

“Good. It’s on its way, with my terms and my privacy page in it.”

Say no, and she says “That’s fine, I won’t,” sends nothing and carries on. If you don’t answer, or she can’t tell what you said, she sends nothing. You never have to say yes to a text to buy Betsy or to talk with her. Here it is as one picture.

Each text is asked for

She only texts someone who said yes themselves, and she says what the text is first. The first ask on a call also says the part about rates, STOP, HELP and sharing. These are the asks:

  • If you’re setting someone up: “May I text you what we just set up, from Betsy? That’s her number, the time and a link to put your card on file, then the words to tell her. After that, only a note when your card is first charged, when the calls stop, and once a year.”
  • If you’re her family: “May I text you at this number, from Betsy? On Sundays I’d send one line about her week, and I’d text you the same day if she tells me about a fall, an illness or somebody after her money, or asks me to pass something along. It varies, about one a week.” Say no, and she still calls your mom, but she can’t reach you by text.
  • If you’re calling for yourself: “May I text you my number, so it’s easy to save as Betsy?”
  • If you work with older people: “May I text you the one-page sheet about what I do and don’t do?” or “May I text you when the cards are on their way?”
  • If you’re a reporter: “May I text you the press page?”

The answer is kept

Before a text goes out, Betsy writes down what she asked and what you said, with your number, the date and the time. If you said yes to keeping the call, the recording is kept with it. If you said no, that written note is all there is.

We keep the note even if the rest is deleted, so we can show you said yes, and so we never text a number that said stop.

No mobile information will be sold or shared with third parties for promotional or marketing purposes.

What the texts say

Every text says it’s from Betsy and how to stop. None is advertising. How often varies: a family gets about one a week, and more if something comes up. Anyone else gets only what they asked for.

STOP and HELP

  • Reply STOP and all texts from 1-855-442-3879 stop. The phone network answers with one message of its own, saying so. That also stops the Sunday text and anything Betsy would pass on, even a fall.
  • STOP doesn’t stop her calls or your billing. To stop those, call 1-855-HI-BETSY and say stop.
  • Reply START or UNSTOP to begin again.
  • Or tell Betsy on a call that you don’t want texts, and she stops them.
  • Reply HELP and she sends how to reach us: 1-855-442-3879, hello@hibetsy.com and this page.
  • Betsy can’t read texts. Anything else you reply goes unread. To reach her, call. In an emergency, call 911.
  • Message and data rates may apply. Carriers aren’t liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
