Betsy is the best way to check on Dad every day without a camera: $2 a day, billed $60 a month. A computer voice calls him at the hour he picks and asks about his life. Nobody watches him. If he mentions a fall, an illness or someone after his money, you hear the same day.
How we judged
We make Betsy, so she is first here. Other services’ facts are from their own sites, checked November 5, 2026. A camera can show you a kitchen. It can’t ask him how the ladder went. So we judged every way of keeping up with Dad on what a camera leaves out:
- A real conversation. Somebody asks about the hardware store and lets him talk.
- Memory from call to call. Yesterday’s story is still there, so he isn’t starting over.
- The same voice from the same number. One voice to get used to, and one number to save.
- Any phone, with nothing to install. No lens, no sensor and no app for him.
- What stays private. His kitchen stays his, and you hear what you need to hear.
Why is Betsy first?
Because Dad can answer “fine” for ten years running, and nobody learns a thing. Betsy doesn’t ask how he feels. She asks about something he knows: the store, the truck, the four hundred weddings on the bass. She talks about a third of the time, and the rest is his.
A call sounds like this.
Leon, it’s Betsy, the one who isn’t a person. Four hundred weddings on the bass. What’s the worst one you ever played?
Scranton, 1969. The groom’s mother sang. All nine verses.
Nine verses of what?
Nobody ever found out. The drummer left.
Did you?
I was paid by the hour.
Same time tomorrow?
Same time tomorrow.
Nobody watches him. Somebody asks him.
She calls every day, at the hour he picks, for about ten minutes, in the same voice, from the same local number. She remembers every conversation, so each call starts where the last one ended. He can call her any time at that number, and Betsy knows who it is. Any phone will do: a cell, a landline or a flip phone. There is nothing to install, charge or learn, and nothing in the house that wasn’t there before. Betsy is a computer voice, says so on every call, and never asks for money.
What do you hear, with no camera?
On Sunday, one text, one line and one story: “Leon had a good week. Ask him about the wedding in Scranton.” That is your next question after “how are you.” If he tells Betsy about a fall, an illness, someone after his money, or anything he asks her to pass along, you hear the same day, in his own words, and Betsy tells him when she does. Everything else stays his, because that is why he keeps talking.
The price is $2 a day, billed $60 a month. No device, no setup fee, no contract, no tiers. Your card goes on file before his first call, and nothing is charged until day eight. If the first week doesn’t make Dad’s day, call and say stop before then, and you pay nothing. He says “stop” and it stops, and unused months are refunded. What Betsy is has the rest.
What else works without a camera?
After Betsy, these are in no particular order. Some cost nothing but a phone call of your own.
A neighbor with a key
Someone close by who knows him and can knock on the door. It costs nothing. It’s for the day he needs someone there in minutes. Ask this week, while nothing is wrong, and write down the neighbor’s number.
A weekly visit
You, a sibling, or someone you pay. Papa sends a paid person for company, rides, errands and light housework, at $30 an hour if you pay for it yourself. A visit is for eyes on the fridge, the mail and the gutters, and a stuck drawer may get more out of him than a direct question.
A shared calendar
One calendar the family shares, showing who calls on which day and who visits when. It costs nothing. It’s for the sisters and brothers who each assumed someone else called on Tuesday.
A person who phones
At ToneOfCare, a person phones at the same time each day for a conversation. $119 a month for one call a day. It’s for a family that wants a person on the line.
A press-1 call
Iamfine places a recorded call once or twice a day, and he presses 1. $14.99 a month or $120 a year. It’s for a daily keypress.
A public program
Some states and sheriffs run daily calls at no cost for their own residents. Maryland’s Senior Call Check and Social Connections is for residents 60 and older: 1-866-502-0560. Chautauqua County’s sheriff in New York runs R.U.O.K.: 716-753-4582. In other places, the Eldercare Locator, 1-800-677-1116, connects you to local services, and our list by state has more.

Questions people ask
How can I check on my elderly father without a camera?
Give him a daily conversation, and one neighbor with a key. Betsy calls him every day at the hour he picks and asks about his life. If he mentions a fall, an illness or someone after his money, you hear the same day.
How do I know my dad is okay if he lives alone?
Have someone talk with him every day, someone see the house every week, and a neighbor hold a key. Betsy takes the daily talk, at $2 a day, billed $60 a month.
What does Betsy talk about with Dad?
Something he knows: the store, the truck, the worst wedding he ever played. Betsy asks, remembers the answer, and talks about a third of the time. The rest is his.
Does Betsy watch him?
No. Betsy is a phone call, not a monitor. Nobody watches him. If he mentions a fall, an illness or someone after his money, you hear the same day.
What if Dad doesn't want it?
He says “stop” on any call and the calls stop, with no script and no “are you sure.” Unused months are refunded.
