Betsy is the best call for a mother who only has a landline: $2 a day, billed $60 a month, for about ten minutes of conversation on the phone she already has, with no key to press and nothing to install. The caller-ID box, if she has one, reads BETSY. Betsy remembers every conversation.
How we judged
We make Betsy, so she is first here. Other services’ facts are from their own sites, checked November 5, 2026. A landline rules out anything built on apps, texts or Wi-Fi, so we looked at calls that ring that phone, and judged them on five things:
- A real conversation. She lifts the receiver and someone asks about her life.
- Memory from call to call. Today’s call picks up where yesterday’s stopped.
- The same voice from the same number. One number to write on the pad by the phone, once.
- Any phone, with nothing to install. No new phone and nothing to plug in.
- What stays private. She can say what she likes, and the family hears what it needs to hear.
Why is Betsy first on a landline?
Because all Mom has to do is lift the receiver. Every day, at the hour she picks, between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. her local time, that phone rings and Betsy is on the line for about ten minutes. There is no key to press. Betsy asks about her life, talks about a third of the time, and leaves the rest to Mom.
The name shows up too. The caller-ID box, if she has one, reads BETSY, and nobody has to save a contact. If there is no box, the phone just rings, as it always has. It’s the same voice from the same local number, forever, and Betsy tells her that a different number saying it’s Betsy isn’t.
Betsy remembers every conversation, so each call starts where the last one ended. Mom can dial the same number from the same phone any time, and Betsy knows who it is. There is nothing to install, charge or learn, and the family’s part happens on your phone, not hers.
She lifts the receiver. That is the whole setup.
A call sounds like this.
Margaret, it’s Betsy, the one who isn’t a person. You were telling me about the cord on that kitchen phone.
Twenty-five feet. I could reach the stove, the sink and the back door.
Who were you talking to?
My sister, every night, while the potatoes boiled.
And the potatoes?
Burned, about once a week. Harold thought that was how they came.
Same time tomorrow?
Same time tomorrow.
What do you hear, when her only phone has a cord?
Your phone gets what hers can’t. On Sunday, one text, one line and one story: “Margaret had a good week. Ask her about the cord on the kitchen phone.” If she tells Betsy about a fall, an illness or someone after her money, you hear the same day, in her own words, and Betsy tells her when she does. Everything else stays hers, because that is why she keeps talking.
The price is $2 a day, billed $60 a month. No device, no setup fee, no contract, no tiers. Your card goes on file before her first call, and nothing is charged until day eight. If the first week doesn’t make Mom’s day, call and say stop before then, and you pay nothing. Say “stop” and it stops, and unused months are refunded. Betsy is a computer voice, says so on every call, and never asks for money. What Betsy is has the rest.
How do you tell her, when a text can’t reach that phone?
Say it out loud, on the phone or at her table.
Mom, I signed you up for something called Betsy. She’ll call you every day if you want her to. Write this number on the pad by the phone. Call her when you’re ready. She knows you’re coming.
A card follows in the mail, addressed to her, from you, with your note on it. If you’d rather, Betsy calls her: you confirm she’s okay with it, and you tell her to expect the call. Nobody gets a cold call. Tell Mom has the rest of the words.
What else works on a landline?

It’s for Maryland residents 60 and older: 1-866-502-0560. In other states, the Eldercare Locator, 1-800-677-1116, connects you to local services, and our list by state has more.
- Community Phone. A home phone service on a cellular base that works with almost any corded or cordless phone. Its family plan, $89 a month plus a one-time $99 base, lets family set up automated check-in calls. It’s for a house that wants to keep its corded phone.
