Betsy is the Papa alternative for a mother who mainly wants someone to talk to: $2 a day, billed $60 a month, against $30 an hour for a visit. A computer voice calls at the hour she picks, talks for about ten minutes and remembers every conversation. Phone callers you hire and public programs are the other kinds.
We make Betsy, so she comes first here. Other services’ facts are from their own sites, checked November 5, 2026.
Papa sends a paid person to the house for company, rides, errands and light housework. Maybe the hours add up, or Mom would rather not have someone new in the kitchen. If what she wants most days is a good talk, you don’t have to buy it by the hour.
Betsy (ours): what does the money buy?
A conversation every day, at the hour she picks, for about ten minutes. It’s the same voice from the same local number, forever. There is nothing to book and nobody to let in. Betsy asks about Mom’s life and remembers every conversation, so each call starts where the last one ended. Mom can call her any time at that number, and Betsy knows who it is. Betsy is a computer voice, says so on every call, and never asks for money. What Betsy is has the rest.
A month of Betsy costs what two hours of Papa’s visits cost.
A call sounds like this.
Hi Angela, it’s Betsy, the one who isn’t a person. You never told me what you said when he proposed on that bus.
I said, this is my stop.
And was it?
It was. He got off anyway and walked me home in the rain.
Oh, that’s wonderful. Same time tomorrow?
Same time tomorrow.
What does the family hear?
One text on Sunday, one line and one story: “Angela had a good week. Ask her what she said on the bus.” If she tells Betsy about a fall, an illness or someone after her money, you hear the same day, in her own words, and Betsy tells her when she does. Everything else stays hers.
What does it cost?
$2 a day, billed $60 a month, for every day of the month. No device, no setup fee, no contract, no tiers. Your card goes on file before her first call, and nothing is charged until day eight. If the first week doesn’t make Mom’s day, call and say stop before then, and you pay nothing. Say “stop” and it stops, and unused months are refunded.

How do you choose?
Does she get a real conversation, or a keypress?
If a good talk is the part of the visit you want to keep, look for talk. Betsy asks what she said on that bus, then waits. Mom does most of the talking, for about ten minutes a day.
Does the voice remember her?
It’s the same voice every day, and she remembers every conversation: who proposed, which bus, which knee. Mom never has to tell a story twice, unless she wants to.
Can she keep the phone she has, with nothing to wear or charge?
Yes. There is nothing to book and nothing to wear, charge or learn. Betsy rings a cell, a landline or a flip phone at the hour Mom picks, and Mom can ring her back any time.
